A whimsical new event is set to bring magic to the Interlake next weekend.
The first annual Shadows and Starlight Fantasy Festival will take place June 7 at the Eriksdale Recreation Centre, offering a full day of enchantment for all ages. Hosted by Shadows and Starlight Fantasy Events, the gathering invites guests to don their favourite fantasy attire and step into a world of imagination — from foam sword battles to a glittering evening ball.
The event came to life through a partnership with the ROGerKimLee Music Festival, after one of its organizers expressed interest in bringing live-action roleplay (LARP) to the Interlake.
“Being someone who is involved a bit with that and with the fantasy realm, we banded together to create a fundraiser for their August festival,” said co-owner Erica Lindell. “I grew up in Eriksdale as well and wanted to bring some opportunity for those who love cosplay, or LARP, or the fantastical to be able to spend a day or evening at an event catered for that.”
The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a fantasy market featuring local artisans, tarot readers, authors, and a host of costumed characters. LARP groups Frontier Events and Misthaven will bring their stories to life through interactive demonstrations, while Viking reenactors from the Hands of Lugh will be on hand to share their craft and lore.
Daytime entry is $5 per adult, with free admission for anyone under 18.
“We wanted to create something that brings people together in a fun, creative way — a place where you can step out of the ordinary and into a magical experience,” said Lindell. “Whether you come in costume or just to explore, there’s something for everyone.”
At 8 p.m., the venue transforms into a magical ballroom for an evening social unlike any other. Guests can expect LED performances, a night market, a silent auction, a high tea snack bar, and the crowning of the ball’s king and queen. Dressing up is encouraged — but not required — and costume rental discounts are available through Ragpickers.
Evening tickets are $45 for adults, $15 for children, and free for kids under four. The celebration wraps at 1 a.m.
Organizers are hoping to draw more than 100 guests from across Manitoba and have promoted the event alongside local businesses and accommodations to help support regional tourism.
“We’ve shared places to stay and places to check out on our website and social media,” Lindell said.
Parking is available at the rec centre and the adjoining lot. Recommended lodging includes the Eriksdale Inn, Sharptail Motor Inn, Lundar Motel, hotels in Arborg, and various AirBnB options.
