Gimli RCMP arrest Winnipeg man after residential break-in

Date:

A Winnipeg man has been arrested and charged following a reported break and enter at a rural residence in the RM of Armstrong.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Gimli RCMP received a call at about 10:10 p.m. on Jan. 12 reporting a break and enter in progress at a home along Highway 229 in the Rural Municipality of Armstrong.

Police said a homeowner discovered an unknown male asleep on the garage floor upon returning home. Officers learned the male later woke up, began throwing items inside the garage and assaulted one of the homeowners, who was able to escape.

When police arrived, they located the suspect sleeping inside a locked vehicle in the garage. Upon being awakened, the male became aggressive and resisted police. After repeated attempts to de-escalate the situation, officers deployed a conducted energy weapon, which was effective.

The male was arrested and taken to hospital as a precaution. After being medically assessed, he was released back into police custody.

One responding officer was injured during the incident and is expected to make a full recovery.

Trevor Roesler, 40, of Winnipeg, has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer, break and enter, assault with a weapon and resisting arrest. He has been remanded into custody.

The investigation is continuing.
