Lundar Kodiaks join WHSHL for inaugural season

Date:

A new team is hitting the ice in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League this season.

For the first time, the Lundar School Kodiaks have iced a boys’ hockey team competing in the WHSHL’s Price Division, playing home games out of Lundar Arena.

The team was formed following strong interest from the school’s middle years hockey academy, which began last year.

Head coach Tyler Medeiros leads the Kodiaks alongside assistant coaches Eric Eronen and Jayson Christensen. The coaching staff is just as excited as the players about the opportunity to bring high school hockey to Lundar.

“It’s great. The goal is just to give kids an opportunity, and I think they realize the opportunity they have here. They’re working really hard and trying to make the most of it,” Medeiros said.

The Kodiaks operate as a co-op, with a few players from St. Laurent School and Ashern Central School joining the roster.

Medeiros and Eronen were among the key people behind the team’s creation, along with Brad and Diana Drews, Lundar School, and the Lakeshore School Division.

The Kodiaks dropped the puck on their inaugural 2025–26 season with a preseason win on Sept. 25. Since then, they’ve split a pair of tournament games and played their first two regular season contests. Their schedule includes 22 more games, including their home opener against Niverville at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Lundar Arena.

“It’s about trying to be consistent and bringing our game every night — getting good team buy-in and showing them what hockey looks like in all these other communities we play against,” said Medeiros.

The middle years hockey academy is also helping build the program’s future by developing players before they become eligible for the high school team in Grade 9.

This year’s academy includes 21 students from Grades 5 to 7, after launching last year with Grades 5 and 6. Medeiros said they hope to expand the program to include Grade 8 in the future.
