Emma Volk plays part in film that was screened at a film festival in the States
Earlier this month Emma Volk a Selkirk seven-year-old got to experience something that most children don’t get a shot at. She went to LA to see the screening of a short film, The Dance, which she starred in at the Golden State Film Festival.
In the film, Emma plays the part of 8-year-old Sherry.
“It’s a true story because there was a girl named Sherry and when she was younger, she used to play in the snow with her mom,” said Emma.
Emma’s mom Jill Volk explained that it’s a story about medically assisted death. Sherry’s mother has health conditions as well as bipolar disorder and passed away.
“The little girl experienced her mother’s erratic behaviour growing up,” explained Volk.
Later in the movie Sherry Cloutier, who plays herself, starts to understand the situation as her mother is diagnosed and reflects on her experiences.
The film was written by Sherry Cloutier and directed by Cindy Myskiw. In addition to Cloutier and Emma playing different versions of Sherry, Olivia Snow plays a 12-year-old version of the character.
Volk explained that Emma was locally cast as the part was looking for a girl about her age.
Emma started her journey as an actress with acting classes and caught the acting bug during her first role.
Emma is not new to the film industry. She’s starred in the Netflix series The Night Agent as well as the film Ordinary Angels, and her first on-screen performance was in the movie A Dog’s Journey when she was a toddler.
Emma enjoys acting and wanted to be part of this project.
“I think [acting’s] really fun. And because my favourite part was doing snow angels,” said Emma.
She says that she enjoyed going to LA to the film festival because she got to watch the film and go to the beach.
The film is currently on the film festival circuit so it’s not yet available to the public to view.
In the future, Emma says that she’d like to continue to do acting because it’s fun to do.
Her mom agrees that as long as Emma is having fun and loves it that she will support her interest.
“[We] just enjoy every moment and support her when she needs the support. Her school has been awesome. She just wrapped a film. She was filming it over Christmas, and she missed some school. The teachers in the school have been really great. And so, we just support her and enjoy every moment,” said Volk.
