Selkirk band, the Bloodshots, continues to put out great local tunes. Recently, they came out with their latest single Every Time I Die. To celebrate the new song’s release, they’ve done something a little special. They teamed up with the owners of Shrugging Doctor, a brewery in Winnipeg, to create their own cider and are going to be playing at a release gala for the new brew on Nov. 28 at Shrugging Doctor’s taproom in Winnipeg.
CJ Loane of the Bloodshots explained that the group was looking into teaming up to create a beverage of some sort to go alongside their music. They had the realization that there were quite a few great craft brewing companies in the province and thought teaming up with one of them might be a fun collaboration.
“This summer, when we would get together to rehearse and do band things. We decided, let’s get some apple ciders. And then, we realized there were other flavours, so we made it the ‘Summer of Ciders’. We started drinking apple cider when we were getting together. And then we thought, ‘You know what? Maybe we should see if any of these brewers do a cider.’,” said Loane.
After looking for the right fit in brewers, they came across Shrugging Doctor, who not only made cider but were also fans of the Bloodshots.
Shrugging Doctor, influenced by the Bloodshots’ work, created Every Time I Cider which is a classic take on apple cider. It’s made from real crushed apples with no artificial flavour. The cider is non-carbonated, crisp, and 6.1% alc./vol. Each bottle is 750ml, so it’s more like the size of a bottle of wine than the size of a beer bottle.
“It was more or less them making it inspired by the band. They asked what we wanted. And we said, there are lots of flavours and variations of ciders nowadays, but people, I feel will resonate with just straightforward, crisp apple cider. It’s got a vintage apple cider taste,” said Loane.
After talking about what they were hoping to see, the band left the creation of the cider in the hands of the brewery, and they were happy with the outcome.
“We love it. We each got a bottle before the release, and we’re all done with our shares already,” said Loane.
This cider was made in celebration of the Bloodshots’ latest release Every Time I Die, which came out a bit earlier this fall.
Loane explained that this new song is one that has a more punk-rock feel compared to some of their more recent releases.
“It’s a song that’s been adapted a few times in our set. We’ve changed this part, changed that part, and made it better and more radio-friendly. It’s a song about giving all of yourself to something, and it’s just never enough,” said Loane.
He said that it’s something that people will likely relate to, and they’ve been getting some pretty good feedback.
If you’d like to listen to Every Time I Die, it’s available on most listening platforms, including: Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon Music, Soundcloud, Tidal and Deezer. The QR code on the right will bring you straight there. They are also going to be releasing a music video for the single towards the end of this month.
If you want to listen to the Bloodshots’ music and grab a bottle of the new cider, going to the release gala is where that can happen.
“It’s at the Shrugging Doctor Beverage Room, which is on Berry Street in Winnipeg, and we’re decorating the place up with all kinds of Bloodshots stuff. And we’re going to have two projectors set up, and they’ll just be steadily playing stuff that we’ve done over the years with radio, TV, or music videos. Then we are going to do an acoustic unplugged performance,” said Loane.
They’ll also have some new holiday merchandise dropping, and you can pick it up at the event on Nov. 28 or by messaging them on their socials.
Tickets to the gala are $25 each and included in that is a bottle of Every Time I Cider. The gala is on Nov. 28 from 7 to 10 p.m., and the Bloodshots encourage anyone who’s interested to pick up a ticket.
