It was a special night Nov. 27 as Red River Valley Palliative Care hosted its annual Shining Lights memorial service at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Morris.

The long-running event—three decades and counting—paid tribute to lost family and friends.

Locals in communities across the region have also donated lights or  funds to purchase lights to help the memories of loved ones live in all our hearts during the darkest days of winter, shared palliative care community coordinator Holly Rafferty.

“As friends, family, and neighbours slip away from our presence, we stop to acknowledge grief around us and in our own hearts.”

Thanks to the help of volunteers, memorial lights are shining bright at the Emerson Care Home, Emerson Complex garden, Calderwood’s on Waddell Avenue in Dominion City, St Jean Manor, the Morris Museum, Morris Hospital, and the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris.

“The committee is extremely grateful for the donations in the silver collection and lights that were donated,” Rafferty said.

“Emerson firefighters, Emerson LUD, and Franklin R.M. along with many private donations sponsored a revamp of the lights at Emerson Care Home,” she said, noting an event was held in early November to flip the switch on those displays. “Many thanks to Monique Mayner and many others who helped make this happen.

“Thank you to all those who lent a hand and to the families who participated or just attended the service. This was meant for you from your community.”
