For Kara Janzen and her classmates, this year’s Long Table Dinner is more than a community celebration — it’s the perfect setting to reconnect with old friends.
The Carman Collegiate Class of 1985 is planning its 40th high school reunion for July 2025, and organizers are hoping to gather at least 60 attendees. Janzen, who now lives in Boca Raton, Fla., said the idea to hold the reunion during the Long Table Dinner came naturally.
“It’s a beautiful venue, raises money for a worthwhile cause, and it enables us to visit with neighbours and friends in addition to our classmates,” she said.
Traditionally, past reunions were held during Carman Fair weekend, but this year, organizers wanted to avoid competing events and maximize attendance. Janzen said the planning began in January and credits Judy McGregor from Communities in Bloom for getting things started before a full committee was formed.
“The reunion committee includes Tamara Bell, Linda Doerksen, Kim Lush and myself,” said Janzen. “We’re aiming to celebrate 1985 in style — expect table decorating competitions with that theme in mind.”
The biggest challenge so far has been reconnecting with classmates. While about half of the graduating class is part of a dedicated Facebook group, others have been harder to reach.
“We also use email to contact people directly, but there are still many we’re trying to track down,” Janzen said. “Hopefully this story helps get the word out.”
While the formal gathering is limited to the Long Table Dinner, organizers are hoping to make it memorable. Janzen said there are plans to honour classmates who have passed.
“We are looking at donating a park bench with a memorial plaque,” she said.
For Janzen, the event is about more than nostalgia.
“Carman is special,” she said. “It’s a community that cares — people pour their energy into fundraising, town beautification and events. I love coming home every year. This is a way to give back and see old friends. It’s a win-win.”
Asked what she’s most looking forward to, Janzen didn’t hesitate: “A beautiful night under a full moon with old friends.”
Despite years away from Carman, some things feel unchanged.
“There are new buildings and businesses, but otherwise it’s wonderfully familiar. We still have Syl’s Drive-In!”
Janzen fondly recalls a riverboat cruise for their Grade 12 graduation party — especially when Simple Minds’ Don’t You (Forget About Me) played.
“We all danced and sang the words — basically asked that we don’t forget each other. I still smile when I hear that song. Hopefully the band will play it at the Long Table Dinner!”
Looking ahead, Janzen is optimistic the class will stay connected.
“Absolutely. Mark your calendars for 2035 and our 50th reunion!”
