Elm Creek Skating Rink funding nearing goal for artificial ice plant

Date:

The Elm Creek Skating Rink is inching closer and closer to having an artificial ice plant to house hockey players and skaters all winter long in Elm Creek.

On Aug. 9, Scotswood Links hosted a successful golf tournament fundraiser for the artificial ice plant. Organizers note that the tournament went very well and that local support was displayed throughout the day.

The tournament brought in $58,780, which included donations, a 50/50, a silent auction, and a golf tournament. Brad Archibald’s team won the golf tournament and local Carman musician The Rainy Day Apparel entertained the evening.

Elm Creek Skating Rink board treasurer Tyra McIntyre and past president Chris Miller organized the tournament with Scotswood Links. They did a terrific job making sure it was organized and ran smoothly. For the rink upgrade, the organizing committee is working with Manitoba Hydro to develop a plan to run three-phase power to the new building. The committee is still visiting local businesses for contributions, pushing hard to meet its $450,000 goal sooner rather than later. Currently, they are nearing 80 percent of the goal.

As of last Thursday, the RM of Grey has agreed to let the skating rink proceed with its detached building to house the ice plant and issued it a grant of $30,000.

“We’re waiting on a permit from the planning district, and then we will start pouring concrete. We should get the building built this fall,” said Daniel Lepp of the Elm Creek Skating Rink board. “Talks of installing the floor in the rink under the surface are ongoing for a possible timeline of late fall.”
