RM of Thompson approves utility rate studies, bridge contract

 The Rural Municipality of Thompson council met Sept. 11 to review infrastructure projects, utilities and community initiatives, while approving several resolutions.

Council gave first reading to two utility rate by-laws following recent rate studies, one for the Miami Urban Utility and another for the Thompson Rural Water Utility. Both will be sent to the Public Utilities Board for approval.

Infrastructure discussions included approval of the Sylvester Bridge construction management contract and authorization for full design of a new waste disposal ground (WDG) cell, which will be submitted to the province.

Council also approved a drainage application for Zack Wiebe Farms Ltd., supported a grant application from the Miami Senior Citizens Housing Association, and authorized participation in a cyber security co-operation program as offices prepare for upgrades to Windows 11.

In other council news:

• Public Works updates: Training requests approved; discussions on road conditions, grading, mowing, ditching, culvert replacements

• Waste Disposal Grounds: Council discussed keeping mattresses out of the landfill, future cell development, and site maintenance.

• CAO report: Covered GRO Grant application, snow removal agreement with Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI), hydrant replacement, and planning/development changes through MSTW Planning District.

• Financials: Council approved July 31 bank reconciliation and authorized $78,036.43 in accounts for payment.

• Community reports: Reviewed semi-annual minutes and financial statements from Miami Golf and Country Club, and authorized purchase of four individual tickets to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation Gala.

• Clearlight Energy presentation: Council recessed at 10 a.m. to hear a presentation.
