Zacharias shines as Beavers top Northstars

Date:

Strong goaltending and timely scoring lifted the Carman Beavers to a 4–1 victory over the Ile des Chenes Northstars in SEMHL action this past week.

Luke Zacharias delivered a standout performance between the pipes for Carman, turning aside 54 shots in a 60-minute effort to earn the win. Ile des Chenes generated sustained pressure throughout the night, but the Beavers limited second chances and capitalized on their opportunities.

Jackson Reimer opened the scoring late in the first period, finishing a play set up by Scott Atkins and Quade Froese. After the Northstars tied the game early in the second, Dean Gorchynski restored Carman’s lead at 18:30 of the middle frame with what proved to be the game-winning goal, assisted by Kale Ilchena and captain Tyler Park.

Carman pulled away in the third with goals from Duncan Jowett and Everett Bestland, the latter sealing the outcome with an empty-net marker in the final minutes. Bestland’s goal was assisted by Ilchena and Derek Wood.

Special teams were largely a non-factor, with neither team converting on limited power-play chances. The game concluded with a series of late penalties following a scrum in the final minute.

The win moves Carman to 3-6 on the season. The Beavers return to home ice Friday, Dec. 19, when they host Springfield, before heading to Notre Dame on Saturday, Dec. 20, for a matchup with the Hawks.

Notre Dame did not see action this past week and enters the weekend at 3-3 on the season. The Hawks are on the road when they play Ile des Chenes on Friday before welcoming Carman the following night at 6:30 p.m.
