Winnipeg Beach and Dunnottar Lakeside Lions will host their third Amazing Race Challenge on Aug. 10 — a team-based competition filled with quirky, family-friendly activities across the region. “We love giving back to the community, so hosting this activity day is something for everyone to look forward to,” said organizer Lisa Boyer with the Winnipeg Beach and Dunnottar Lakeside Lions  gear up for third community-wide competition.

Lakeside Lions. “There are so many hidden gems to discover in this area and this is the perfect opportunity to explore just some of the beautiful things we have to offer.”

Open to all ages, teams can consist of two to seven members — or however many legally fit in a vehicle. Participants under age 16 must be paired with someone over 21. Teams are encouraged to register in advance for $10 or pay $20 on race day. Silly team names and creative costumes are not only welcome — they could win you a prize.

Last year’s race drew 33 teams who tackled a mix of physical and mental challenges, including Zumba, water balloon tosses and navigating group planks. Boyer teased that a crowd favourite will be back this year.

“The (Winnipeg Beach) Fire Department always puts on a fun challenge for everyone,” she said. “They’re planning something again this year, so competitors should know they will be in for a good time.”

Each team receives a race book to collect stamps from completed activities. Orientation begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Winnipeg Beach Recreation Centre, with the race officially starting at 11 a.m. Teams can complete as many challenges as they choose in any order — but must return their stamped book by 3 p.m. to avoid point deductions.

“There are so many different types of challenges there will be something for everyone to enjoy,” Boyer said. “Hosts try to make accessible challenges for everyone as we believe everyone should have the chance to have fun.”

The event wraps up at 4 p.m. with a prize ceremony near the Winnipeg Beach Bandstand.

To help teams prepare, Boyer will send out a list of suggested items in advance — including sunscreen, bug spray, water and a change of clothes.

“It is a great day for everyone to come out, enjoy themselves and enjoy the area,” she said. “So, bring your smiles and a great attitude and see if you can be crowned champion of the Lakeside Lions Amazing Race.”
