Gimli health auxiliary donates $22K to local care

Date:

The Gimli District Health Auxiliary is continuing its longstanding tradition of supporting local health care with a major donation to the Gimli Community Health Centre.

At its annual general meeting held May 6, the Auxiliary approved a $22,000 contribution to various departments at the facility. The funds were raised through community-driven efforts in 2024, including gift shop sales, monthly 50/50 draws and a Mom’s Pantry fundraiser.

Auxiliary president Elaine Thompson said the group works closely with hospital staff to prioritize items that enhance patient care.

“Each January, we reach out to the departments to find out what they ‘wish’ they could buy,” Thompson explained. “By spring, we review those submissions and look at what we can fund based on our budget.”

Since 2008, the Auxiliary has donated more than $260,000 to the local medical community.

In 2024, one of the requests was a reclining lab chair for patients who feel faint during bloodwork. Thompson visited the lab this spring to see it for herself.

“It was surprisingly comfortable,” she said with a smile. “The technician told me it’s already been used multiple times—it’s made a real difference.”

For 2025, the Auxiliary is planning new fundraisers, including a silent auction in partnership with Access Credit Union and the sale of Grey Cup tickets.

“These funds make an impact on patients and staff alike,” Thompson said. “It’s a team effort, and we’re proud to be part of it.”

The Auxiliary is always looking for new members and volunteers to help continue its work.
