The Icelandic River Community Foundation has always been dedicated to supporting their local community, and this year was no exception.
Recently, members of the foundation visited Riverdale Place Homes to see firsthand how their donations have made a difference in the community. From hydraulic lift tubs to accessible showers, these projects have improved the lives of residents with mobility issues.
One such project was Oli’s Gesta Hus on Second Ave. in Arborg, which received a hydraulic lift tub that would allow ease of bathing for residents. The Foundation donated $13,000 towards this project while Thomas Sill Foundation also contributed $12,000.
The hydraulic lift tub allows easy and safe access for those with limited mobility or who require assistance from caregivers. This addition will undoubtedly help improve the quality of life for residents living at Oli’s Gesta Hus.
Following the tour, entertainment was provided by one of the younger residents, Sarah, who has exceptional talent with the spoons.
The second project, at the Spruce Apartments on Crosstown Ave., was a new accessible shower for $13,054.66 paid in full by IRCF. This will allow users with mobility issues easier access to showers while improving their quality of life.
Larry Speiss, Chair of IRCF even commented on how he could have used something like this after his hip surgery.
Projects like these are essential because they help improve the quality of life for some of our most vulnerable citizens.
Speiss thanked Kathy Finnson, executive director and Laura Oddleifson, administration coordinator for conducting the tours.
The Icelandic River Community Foundation area covers Arborg and the Bifrost-Riverton municipality and would like to remind groups that applications for grants for projects need to be in by Sept. 30. Donations can be made at any time. In November there is a Giving Challenge in which donations to our unrestricted/unspecified funds are matched by the province and Endow Winnipeg $2 for every $5 raised. For more information please feel free to contact anyone on our board or go to our website, www.ircf.ca . Online donations can be made to the foundation through Endow Manitoba’s portal, www.endowmb.org
