Interlake-Gimli MLA Derek Johnson presents a plaque to Lillian Gudmundson in honour of her 100th birthday on March 23

The presentation took place March 23, recognizing Gudmundson’s century of life and her contributions to family and community.

Johnson said it was a privilege to take part in the celebration.

“It was a great honour to present a plaque to Lillian Gudmundson on the occasion of her 100th birthday,” he said in a social media post. “Reaching a century is a remarkable achievement and a testament to a life filled with love, strength, and dedication to family and community.”

Gudmundson’s milestone was marked by not one but two birthday celebrations — one with family and friends, and another with residents at Arborg’s assisted living facility. An elegant white cake with floral decorations and heartfelt messages was prepared by Oma’s Bakeshop for the occasion.

About a week after celebrating with loved ones at Ardal Geysir Lutheran Church, Gudmundson reflected on reaching the milestone.

“It doesn’t feel like I’m 100. I still don’t feel my age,” she said. “I never thought about reaching this age. The secret must be in Arborg’s water.”

While she jokes about the secret to longevity, Gudmundson said she keeps busy with crosswords, jigsaw puzzles and visiting with family and friends.

She also fondly recalled travelling to see her children — driving to Winnipeg and flying to Whitehorse — something she has since given up due to the discomfort of modern airline seating.

“I used to fly to Whitehorse and I really miss that,” she said. “But I’m tall and there used to be more space between the seats. I found I was sitting with my knees up in front of me and suffering.”

Despite slowing down her travels, Gudmundson continues to embrace life. She had a full schedule over Easter weekend, including plans to go out for dinner.

“I do enjoy life,” she said. “Be thankful every day when you wake up every morning.”

Johnson said Gudmundson’s life stands as an inspiration.

“Lillian’s life is an inspiration, reflecting resilience, kindness and the values that help make our communities so strong,” he said.

He added that occasions like this highlight the importance of recognizing those who have helped shape their communities over generations.

“Celebrations like this remind us how important it is to honour those who have helped shape the generations that follow.”

The plaque, presented on behalf of the province, commemorates Gudmundson’s 100th birthday and acknowledges her lasting impact.

Johnson extended his congratulations and best wishes.

“Wishing Lillian continued happiness, good health, and many more cherished moments surrounded by family and loved ones. Congratulations on 100 wonderful years.”
