Lundar Resource Council to mark 30 years with expo on Sept. 26

Date:

The Lundar Community Resource Council (LCRC) is marking its 30th anniversary with an awareness and wellness expo luncheon on Sept. 26.

The LCRC took shape in the early 1990s after community members identified a need for more support for aging adults.

Friday’s come-and-go luncheon runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Lundar Legion Hall. A variety of sandwiches, soups, salads and desserts will be available for a $5 fee per selection. Guests can choose one item for $5, two for $10 or sample widely for $20. Proceeds will support LCRC programs and resources.

After lunch, visitors can bid at a silent auction, enter for a grocery hamper and stop by a five-booth wellness expo to learn about available services.

“We want to bring awareness to the programs we have in the community and show everyone the services are available,” said Lacie Miller of the LCRC, who is proud of the centre’s growth over three decades. “It means we’ve been successful at providing good services for seniors.”

For Patty Johnson, retired Lundar care home director of nursing and a former LCRC board member, the milestone underscores the council’s ability to meet evolving needs.

“It is absolutely exciting because as people age, communities change. You have to be adaptable and flexible as a program, and with the 30th anniversary, it shows we have done just that,” Johnson said.

She noted that while clients and staff have changed, the LCRC’s goal remains the same: to support and provide services to seniors and individuals with different abilities in Lundar and surrounding communities. Over the years, the LCRC has worked with Supports to Seniors in Group Living at the Lundar Senior Citizens Home to deliver meal programs, arrange transportation to medical appointments, coordinate volunteers for property maintenance, operate a mobility-aid loan program and create recreational and social opportunities.

“Demographics show that the aging community in Lundar is not diminishing,” Johnson said. “There is a need for folks to age in place, and that’s where the Seniors Resource Centre has stepped up to create the best well-being of people we can.”

She said the LCRC takes a holistic approach, with opportunities that support social, emotional, physical, nutritional, educational and spiritual needs.

“I like to think of it as, if I was a client, what would I want and need to improve my life? If the supports are there, you can live a well life. And thanks to our good relationship with our funders — the regional health authority — we are able to meet the needs of those who need it most.”

Looking ahead, Johnson hopes the LCRC will continue to evolve and remain a prominent resource.

“Whether you are a longtime Lundar resident or just moved to the area, we are here for you,” she said. “I feel really passionate about the programs offered and a lot of folks around here do too. When individual needs are met, the whole community benefits and can grow together.”
