A latewinter weekend’s dream at the Gimli Ice Festival

Date:

Winter fans got their fill of ice and snow during the 15th annual Gimli Ice Festival last weekend, with polar games team competitions, a fishing derby, harness dog winter sports, horse-drawn wagon rides and bannock and taffy.

The festival offered timeless favourites including the frozen fish toss, the frozen T-shirt competition, Fire on Ice sports-car racing on Lake Winnipeg and Viking battles. The festival also had a vendor market showcasing Gimli Red River Metis artisans, an ATV show, a journey to Arendelle, festival mascot Cooley’s outdoor games and a spectacular fireworks display at the harbour. The festival collaborated with 19 different organizations this year and saw over one hundred volunteers pitch in to make it a success.
