Blue Sky Opportunities hosts fall dinner

Date:

A fun evening out was also supporting a worthy cause as Blue Sky Opportunities held its annual fall fundraiser last Thursday.

The non-profit organization that is committed to the integration and independence of adults with intellectual disabilities filled the hall at the Rhineland Pioneer Centre in Altona for an evening that included entertainment by magician and mind reader Sean Gregoire.

Executive director Ryan Potter noted Blue Sky this year was aiming to raise $20,000.

“It really depends on what we are fundraising for,” he said. “I do feel $20,000 will be an easy target for us.”

Their plan this year is to raise funds for things like new computers.

“It’s for technology to help support our clients better,” Potter said, noting he’s so thankful for the ongoing support of the community. “It’s a sold-out event, so that’s great to see. It is a major thing for us. We do it once a year, and every year we are sold out. There’s lots of support from the community.”

The funding goes a long way to support the organization, and he added it is always nice to see everyone come together.

“We do a bit of a slide show and presentation to show where the company is at,” Potter noted. “It’s a quick update on what’s happening with us.

“I thank the public for always giving us the support that we need.”

Blue Sky Opportunities supports adults with intellectual disabilities by maximizing employment and residential opportunities in the community. The support it offers an individual is unique to that person’s abilities and needs.

Through its commercial division, the organization provides curbside recycling pick-up service for Altona and Rosenfeld as well as regular pickups at recycling depots in some surrounding communities. It also provides weekly cardboard pick-up service from local businesses.

The agency also operates eight residential homes, with 23 individuals who need the 24-hour support

Each home is tailored to the client needs and serves as a safe space where each household member is encouraged to play an active role to help generate a sense of self worth and belonging.

Ron and Dave Epp briefly touched on how Blue Sky’s varied programming has made a difference for their brother Mark, who lives in one of the agency’s residences.

“These were huge benefits to our parents, and it gave Mark some independence … Blue Sky Opportunities has been a big part of Mark’s life. He’s lived in a variety of residences … developed lifelong friendships.

“I just want to say thank you to the staff for all the opportunities afforded Mark to make his life better.”
