Lakeside Lions host Amazing Race challenge

Date:

One hundred forty-two racers hit the streets for the second annual Winnipeg Beach and Dunnottar Lakeside Lions Amazing Race Challenge.

Thirty-three teams participated, with registration nearly doubling from their premier event in 2023.

On Aug. 11, teams of two to seven people raced across Winnipeg Beach, Matlock, Sandy Hook, Ponemah, and Whyteworld to accumulate the most This year’s event was a huge success.

“We sent out a survey to the racers and challenge hosts and received such positive feedback,” said Winnipeg Beach and Dunnottar Lakeside Lions Vice-President Lisa Boyer.

Boyer wants this event to occur in the community because she wants to promote the unique attractions the community has to offer.

“We have such a great little community with so many hidden gems, and offering the race lets people get to see everything in the area that they might not know about,” explained Boyer.

During the Lakeside Lions Amazing Race, participants were required to complete various unique tasks and challenges to earn points.

In 2023, there were various challenges to overcome, such as eating a burger without using hands, completing obstacle courses and a beloved fire hall activity.

“The firefighters were our number one challenge host,” said Boyer.

Participants had the opportunity to use a fire hose and knock down targets.

The Lakeside Lions Amazing Race Challenge kicked off at 11 a.m. at the Winnipeg Beach Municipal Recreation Centre. Racers then travelled across the surrounding communities and finished their race by 3 p.m. at the Winnipeg Beach Bandstand.

After the race, prizes were awarded to the teams who completed the most challenges and those by random draw.

The 2024 race day featured 26 different challenges for team members to try. Many hosts from the previous year also made a comeback, adding to the already thrilling atmosphere.

The Matlock Fire Department returned providing just as much excitement as last year.

Race contestants had to complete three tasks in gear: unroll and roll a firehose, knock down four targets and drag Ruth to safety.

“There were lots of smiles and fun to be had,” Boyer added.

Some other popular events included the Kernstead Road Challenge, which required participants to complete three different tasks:

reversing a small trailer with a quad, participating in a water balloon toss, and working collaboratively to walk as one unit while wearing planks on their feet.

Zumba with Jan Keryluk at the Bandstand was also a huge hit. To receive their points for the challenge, competitors completed a ten-minute Zumba workout.

“It was great fun for everybody,” noted Boyer.

The weather was perfect for the day of adventure, with clear skies and 20 degrees C; it was ideal racing weather.

“We could not have asked for better weather,” said Boyer.

Racers of all ages from around the province rallied to see if they could be the top team at Lakeside Lions Amazing Race.

“There were lots of locals who attended, but a lot of people from Winnipeg came too.”

The Winnipeg Beach and Dunnottar Lakeside Lions are honoured to be able to host the Amazing Race.

“We want to serve our “community however we can,” explained Boyer.

Additionally, the Lakeside Lions make an effort to support and assist the local community in any way they can.

Boyer extends her sincere gratitude to the members of Winnipeg Beach and Dunnottar Lakeside Lions Club and the volunteers who donated their time to host the Amazing Race Challenge.

It is the volunteers who help make the Lakeside Lions Amazing Race possible.

“My lions do an amazing job, and I like to give them credit where credit is due.”

The top five winners were: Beach Bums on the Run, Houligans, Poplar Paws, Team Sharpe and Goat.

If you missed out on Lakeside Lions 2024 Amazing Race, be sure to block off Aug. 10, 2025 for next year’s event.

“Everybody says we got to do it again,” said Boyer.

She elaborated on the race’s recent success in garnering positive feedback through a post participant and host survey.
