Splash, dance and jive: Cooling off with Aqua Zumba

Date:

This summer, the Gimli Aquatic Centre is again offering an enjoyable fitness class.

Aqua Zumba is back for another season of lively music, smooth dance moves and endless fun with two sessions weekly.

The RM of Gimli Recreation Program approached long-time fitness instructor Jan Keyluk in 2018 when the pool opened.

“The uptake from residents was amazing, and Jan was and still is highly praised for the courses she offers,” explained Brenna Philp, Recreation and Leisure Services director.

Gimli has offered AquaFit classes for quite some time, but Aqua Zumba has brought the town new experiences and variety.

“Being able to offer something for everyone is what the Gimli Rec Department strives to achieve with our programming,” Philp added.

Without hesitation, Keryluk eagerly embraced the chance to lead Aqua Zumba classes and completed the necessary training.

Keryluk has been a certified fitness instructor with the Manitoba Fitness Council since 2000.

She took on the role of a licenced Zumba instructor in 2008.

During the height of the pandemic, the Manitoba Fitness Council recognized her dedication and passion for leading fitness classes and named her Rural Fitness Leader of the Year.

“It (Zumba) is a great way to meet people and stay active,” explained Keryluk.

Similar to Zumba, Aqua Zumba incorporates a variety of music and dance styles from around the globe. Keryluk incorporates music from more than 185 countries into her work.

“With Zumba, you can travel the world without a passport.”

“Aqua Zumba is a lot gentler on the joints as the water helps you move more freely,” explained Keryluk. It is suitable for people of all ages and skill levels.

Dancers can attend a one-hour session on Mondays from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. or on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

You are also welcome to attend both sessions to get a real sense of what Aqua Zumba offers.

Aqua Zumba is like a pool party with upbeat music and motivating energy. It is ideal for individuals seeking a refreshing workout. Dancers and swimmers of all levels are welcome to join in on the fun.

“It is a great way to kick off or end your day,”

Keryluk recommends participating if you are comfortable in the water.

“You never have to put your head under the water and your feet are consistently touching the floor of the pool.”

Dancers may wear a bathing suit or close-fitting clothing to help them move freely in the water.

“If you have never tried Aqua Zumba before, bring your smile and a sense of adventure,” Keryluk added.

The classes are $15 a session, and you can sign up at the Gimli Aquatic Centre’s office before each session.

Classes are cancelled if inclement weather approaches. Any necessary closures are announced on Gimli Aquatic Centre’s Facebook page.

“In addition to Aqua Zumba, the Gimli Aquatic Centre offers AquaFit classes, swimming lessons, and dedicated lap swimming times both in the morning and evening,” said Philp.

The RM of Gimli and the Gimli Aquatic Centre also graciously thank the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority’s Healthy Together Now funding program. With the funds received, the Gimli Aquatic Centre has been able to provide the community with free lifeguarding training and certification programs.

Keryluk is also excited to host a session of Aqua Zumba at the Lundar Community Pool on Aug. 14 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.. For those looking to give Aqua Zumba a try, this one-time session is perfect for you to test the waters.
