Dancers from Evolution Dance Company (EDC) spent their first week of summer vacation competing at three different events across Canada.
Fourteen dancers, along with four instructors, represented EDC at the Terpsichore Nationals in Niagara Falls, Ont., Dance Canada Nationals in Brampton, Ont., and the Dance World Cup in Whistler, B.C.
Jessie Wynnyk, EDC associate director, said that while they’ve attended nationals in the past, this was the first time students qualified for the Dance World Cup. Dancers competed in regional events during the dance season to earn their spots at all three competitions, and participated in extra rehearsals to ensure their routines were in top form for the judges.
“Dancers continued training diligently in preparation for these events—keeping up with training and rehearsals,” Wynnyk added.
Locally, several dancers walked and performed in the Selkirk Biz Parade, and EDC hosted its first-ever July summer camps. Two more weeks of camps—a Moana-themed and a Wicked-themed session—are planned for August, along with dance intensives for competitive students. Limited spots remain for each option.
Wynnyk said the dancers had an amazing time participating in the events, sightseeing, learning, and growing together, and they can’t wait to see what their 20th dance season brings when it begins Sept. 7.
“We have some exciting opportunities for our dancers this season to celebrate a memorable year. We can’t share anything quite yet, but it’s sure to be an exciting season.”
