Giroux’s shutout powers Royals to victory over Titans

Date:

The Lord Selkirk Royals boys’ hockey team earned a win in their only game last week, shutting out the Shaftesbury Titans on Friday afternoon.

The Royals downed the Titans 2-0 at Varsity View Sportsplex behind a 23-save performance from Selkirk netminder Rylen Giroux.

Liam Vinck opened the scoring in the first period, and his goal stood as the lone marker for more than 58 minutes. In the dying minutes, Erik Evason sealed the win with an insurance goal to put Selkirk up 2-0.

The victory improved the Royals to 2-4 and moved them into 10th place in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Platinum Promotions Division.

Selkirk was also in action Monday afternoon against Oak Park. Due to press deadlines, the result was unavailable.

Next up is a Wednesday afternoon matchup with Miles Macdonell at Terry Sawchuk Memorial Arena. Puck drop is set for 4:30 p.m.

Selkirk girls  battle through busy week

While the boys were defeating the Titans, the Royals girls’ hockey team earned their first tie of the season at Gateway Recreation Centre, skating to a 2-2 draw with the River East Kodiaks.

The Kodiaks forced overtime with a late third-period goal, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie, with both teams collecting a point. Selkirk’s Kennedy Simpson and Madigan Czarnecki scored in the draw.

The tie came less than 24 hours after a 7-1 home loss to the J.H. Bruns Broncos, where Mindy Smith had the lone Royals tally.

The Royals also dropped a 5-3 decision Monday to the Lorette Scorpions in Selkirk, with Simpson recording a hat trick.

Selkirk’s record now sits at 1-7-1 through nine Manitoba Women’s High School Hockey League games, placing them 12th in Division 1/2 – East.

Next up is a Thursday meeting with West Kildonan at 4 p.m. at Selkirk Recreation Complex.
