Residents advised not to touch or handle sick or dead birds
A large group of geese is stuck on the newly formed ice in Lockport on the Red River.
The current theory from residents in the area is that the birds rested on the river overnight and are now stuck to the ice.
When asked for comment, the provincial government spokesperson did not relay any plans for the geese.
Avian flu is currently affecting birds in Canada, and though no confirmation about flu in this group is available, the spokesperson for the province shared some information about the disease, saying, “Avian influenza is a contagious virus that can affect both wild and domestic birds. Many avian influenza strains occur naturally in wild bird populations and circulate among migratory species without causing widespread disease. Currently, the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 (HPAI) is circulating widely across Canada and in many parts of the world. Wild birds, particularly geese, ducks, and shorebirds, are known to spread the virus between regions during spring and fall migrations, which is when new cases are most often detected.”
They continued saying, “The province is aware of the recent wild bird die-offs occurring in the province. It is recommended that members of the public not touch or handle sick or dead birds.”
This year, the Department of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures has tested 726 individuals, and 54 have tested positive.
