Local athletes capture NCA national cheer title

Date:

Several local athletes are national champions after their team delivered a stunning performance at the NCA All-Star National Championship in Houston.

Competing in the U16 Level 2 Small division, Team Icons of Central Cheer entered Day 2 of the prestigious event sitting fifth overall before delivering a “hit zero” routine — meaning no deductions — to vault into first place with a score of 97.15 out of 100 and claim the championship.

The NCA All-Star National Championship is widely regarded as the world’s largest and most prestigious all-star cheerleading competition. Branded as “The Work Is Worth It,” the event typically features more than 1,300 teams and attracts over 65,000 attendees annually, bringing together athletes from more than 39 U.S. states and nine countries. Winners are awarded championship titles, jackets and the coveted Golden Megaphone trophy.

This year marked a milestone for Manitoba, as a team from the province competed at NCA for the first time.

Among the champions were Molly Beachell of Rosser, a high flyer; Arianna Manness of Stonewall, who competes in the base position; Roxanne Rulan of Matlock, a back spot; and coach Joan McNeilly of Selkirk.

Team Icons’ dramatic comeback on the national stage capped an unexpected but historic victory for the Manitoba squad.
