The Lord Selkirk Royals boys hockey team continues to hover around the .500 mark this season. Entering last week at 5-5, Selkirk kept pace with another win and another loss to move to 6-6, sitting eighth in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League Platinum Promotions Division.
The win came Tuesday with a 4-1 decision over St. Paul’s at Hockey For All Centre. Selkirk opened the scoring on a first-period goal from Kohen Brooks. After St. Paul’s tied it in the second, the Royals responded with three unanswered markers from Sebastian Cychowski, Noah Hartwich and Mason Grant to secure the victory.
Goaltender Owen Coe earned the win with a 31-save performance, allowing just one goal on 32 shots. He was back between the pipes Thursday against Miles Macdonell on home ice, where Selkirk fell 2-0. The Royals surrendered goals in the first and second, with neither team scoring in the third.
Selkirk hosted Beliveau on Dec. 8, but the score was unavailable at press time. They will see Beliveau again Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Southdale Community Centre before facing Vincent Massey on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Max Bell Centre.
Royals girls drop two in tough week
The Royals girls hockey team also saw action last week, dropping both of their games. On Monday, they fell 12-4 to West Kildonan at Selkirk Recreation Complex. Kennedy Simpson scored twice, while Emily Beattie and Mindy Smith added singles.
Selkirk then suffered a 6-1 loss Wednesday against Miles Macdonell at Gateway Recreation Centre. Miles Macdonell led 3-0 entering the third before Beattie put Selkirk on the board. The opposition replied with three more unanswered to close out the game.
The loss dropped Selkirk to 2-10-1-0-0, sitting tied for 11th in the Manitoba Women’s High School Hockey League Division 1/2 East. The Royals also played J.H. Bruns on Dec. 8, though the score was unavailable at press time.
Next up is a trip to St. Vital Centennial Arena on Thursday to take on Glenlawn. Puck drop is set for 4:15 p.m.
