Royals runners turn in solid showing at Birds Hill meet

High school cross country running made its third stop of the season last Wednesday at Birds Hill Provincial Park.

The Lord Selkirk Royals fielded 16 runners, including 12 at the varsity level.

Sara Basanta Paz led the way for Selkirk with a fourth-place finish in Varsity Girls, clocking a time of 17:42.66.

The Grade 11 runner’s performance helped boost the overall team score for the Royals’ Varsity Girls, who currently sit third overall through three meets.

Sara Zorniak (13th), Ella Holmes (21st), Kalista Vaughan (25th) and Kate Wilson (37th) also contributed to the team’s strong showing.

The Varsity Boys also turned in solid results, led by Quinn Fyfe with a time of 22:20.55, good for 27th place.

He was followed by teammates Noah Bushie (37th), Dominik Dainard (43rd), Will Simpson (48th), Elia Gerritzen (49th), Maddox Chase (51st) and Larown Sanderson (52nd).

The Junior Varsity teams were represented by one girl and three boys.

On the JV Boys side, Hyunmin Park came close to a podium finish, placing sixth with a time of 15:18.13.

David Simpson (36th) and Sylas Kematch (45th) were also finishers for the Royals, while Margeaux Kennelly was the lone JV Girls competitor for Selkirk, finishing 17th with a time of 13:32.79.
