Smashing success: Fight Night IV sellout sets standard for future cards

Date:

It’s been a big year for Devin Tomko and the boxing empire he’s built with Maulers Boxing Club in Selkirk.

Tomko and Maulers have stormed the local combat scene with a series of events titled Fight Night that have taken place in the area over the past year.

It all started with the inaugural Fight Night I in June 2024 at the old Selkirk Arena.

That debut was a hit, drawing more than 600 fans, which led to second and third events being held at the same venue over the year.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Tomko and Maulers staged Fight Night IV in front of a sellout crowd at Selkirk Memorial Hall.

The card featured 11 bouts, four of them involving Maulers students.

“It was a great show from start to finish. Great atmosphere, and the sold-out crowd made it even more special,” Tomko said Thursday.

Tomko and his girlfriend planned the event months in advance to help ensure things ran smoothly on fight day.

The main event featured Maulers’ Autumn Clifton taking on Nola McCarthy, who won by judge’s decision.

“It was a David-and-Goliath matchup. Didn’t get the win in that one, but it was a tough fight, so I was very proud of her,” Tomko said.

The other three Maulers had mixed results. Peyton Estelle headlined the group with a win over Matt Carvhallo.

Aiden Godlein landed several blows against Bohdan Solyhan in their bout, but Solyhan ultimately prevailed.

Kingsley Montana Walker faced Cody Vanderveer but was forced to stop due to a separated shoulder.

Though Maulers collected just one win on the night, the fighters still provided quality bouts for the home crowd.

Tomko plans to keep Memorial Hall as a potential host site for future cards, given how well things played out. He also mentioned Landmark Cinemas’ Garry Theatre as another possible location once renovations are complete.

“It just keeps getting easier and easier with the experience, and it’s building our confidence. This one was the smoothest yet,” Tomko said. “It was our first sellout of the series, so we chalked it up as a win. We had a tough night for fights, but I don’t take easy fights for my guys. I put my guys in hard, so I was proud of them for the performances.”

Tomko is also building momentum around a plan to stage a Team Canada vs. Team El Salvador card on July 4, 2026, at the Selkirk Recreation Complex.

The event would be Tomko’s biggest yet. He added that Maulers’ Damir Kudusov could be one of the fighters on the card, making it his final stop before turning professional.
