Jordan Miller showcases her artistic evolution
St. Andrews resident Jordan Miller has a solo show and sale on from now until April 2 at the Cre8ery Gallery and Studio in Winnipeg. The exhibition, titled Letting Go, features 25 of her paintings created with acrylics and alcohol inks.
“I have been going through a process of letting go of an old style, letting go of old mediums, trying new things and really trying to find a new definition of what my art is,” said Miller, who is the owner of Cre8ery.
One shift in her style of art can be seen in the main colours used. Before 2018, Miller’s pieces featured mostly reds, yellows and oranges, whereas now she focuses more on blues, greens and purples.
The theme of letting go reflects both her personal and professional life.
“I think there are lots of people who are like me, and I think they don’t know how to express it, but maybe they can come and experience it,” Miller said.
A few years ago, she left her long-term partner and moved from the centre of Winnipeg to St. Andrews, going “from wild times to quiet times,” she said.
“Creating this new body of work for Letting Go was about learning how to breathe, to stand on my own, to use my own voice and stop listening to the voices of others around me,” Miller wrote in the exhibition description. “This feeling of letting go is absolutely freeing. When painting, it’s important to push stressful experiences away from my mind.”
Additionally, since 2020, she has seen many changes in all aspects of her life due to the pandemic, something reflected in her piece “Hibernation.”
“Hibernation has been my life in isolation from both friends and family to protect both my gallery business (the hive) and my own health as an immune-compromised person living with multiple autoimmune conditions to prevent further complications from disease,” Miller wrote on her website.
The piece “Hibernation” features a beehive with each cell a different colour.
“I’m filling in the void and different spaces and creating space in the work and taking away space and really sort of taking advantage of freedom of space rather than tightly congested objects,” Miller said about the piece.
Letting Go is on now until April 2 at Cre8ery Gallery and Studio, located at 125 Adelaide Street in Winnipeg. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. To arrange a time to visit the exhibit outside these hours, people can contact Miller at 204-944-0809 or jordan@cre8ery.com.
