St. Andrews starts flag football drop-in, hoping to grow organized league

Date:

St. Andrews Soccer Association is starting their first-ever flag football league.

Program director Adam Praznik, along with multiple coaches, held the first free drop-in session for kids born from 2009 to 2016 last Thursday at St. Andrews Airport Soccer Fields and had over forty kids showed up to learn the sport’s rules and compete in a scrimmage.

Praznik hopes that with a few more kids, the drop-in can turn into an organized league by next summer.

“Just trying to grow interested in it this summer, and hopefully, we get all those kids to come back, and they tell their friends, and they come out,” said Praznik.

Praznik began the drop-in to keep kids active in the summer.

Originally, he hoped to have the league running this summer, but he fell a bit short of the 60 kids needed to run an organized league with two age groups and four teams.

In the meantime, the program will continue as a free drop-in broken into three age groups on Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. while they continue trying to grow the program ahead of next summer.

“It went great,” said Praznik following the first drop-in. “It was a real learning experience because I hadn’t played since I was a kid, so I tried to look up all the rules. I ran the younger group and the coaches ran the older groups. We practiced for half an hour and scrimmaged after.”

Praznik is also starting a free ultimate drop-in for anyone ages eight and up (including adults and parents) this Wednesday at the soccer field.

Ultimate drop-in will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
