67’s split busy weekend, earning a point in a shootout loss

Date:

The Warren 67’s split a busy weekend in HTJHL action, earning a point in a shootout loss Friday before falling on the road Saturday.

On Friday, Jan. 16, the 67’s dropped a 4–3 shootout decision to the Steinbach Huskies at Stonewall VMSC. After a scoreless first period, Warren built a 2–0 lead early in the second on goals by Shepard Trosky and Owen Shymko. Steinbach replied later in the frame to make it 2–1, but Colton Bruce restored Warren’s two-goal cushion midway through the third. The Huskies stormed back with two quick goals from Ryder Chabot late in regulation to force overtime, which solved nothing. In the shootout, Steinbach converted twice to secure the extra point, while Trosky scored Warren’s lone shootout marker. Scott Mailloux turned aside 45 shots for the 67’s in the loss.

On Saturday night in Mitchell, Warren dropped a 6–1 decision to the Mitchell Mustangs. Archer Ives scored twice in the first two minutes spanning periods to give Mitchell early control, including the eventual game-winner. Logan Gilkes replied for Warren midway through the second period, but Mitchell pulled away with four unanswered goals over the remainder of the game, including a power-play marker from Jeremy Warkentine.

Mailloux faced heavy pressure, turning aside 67 shots in the loss, while Mitchell netminder Hunter Fehr earned the win with 32 saves. Mitchell finished 1-for-3 on the power play; Warren did not receive a man-advantage opportunity.

The 67’s are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they host East St. Paul at Access Credit Union Arena at 8 p.m.
