For the 10th year in a row, Shelly Nawroski is hosting her annual dog-themed Christmas drive in support of Spirit of Hope Rescue. Hitting the decade mark has her determined to make this year’s fundraiser the biggest one yet.

Spirit of Hope is a foster-based dog rescue, and Nawroski has played a major role in its work. Since the organization launched in 2016, she has fostered more than 75 puppies.

“I have always been passionate about helping dogs, so I started asking for donations — and the drive has continued to grow each year,” she said.

Reaching 10 years fills her with pride, especially as she watches the community rally around the cause. Some donors return every Christmas, while others are discovering the drive for the first time.

“Each and every donor means the world to me and to the rescue,” she said.

Nawroski said she looks forward to the drive each year because it showcases what a community can accomplish when people come together.

“It’s exciting knowing we can support the dogs, and it’s exciting knowing that Spirit of Hope will have some resources to help them get through the winter,” she added. “It’s shocking how much people donate each year — but the more items donated, the more support for the fosters.”

Winter is the toughest season for Spirit of Hope, which takes in a higher number of dogs from northern communities. Veterinary care alone can cost upwards of $30,000 a month, so every donation helps.

“We want to help them get enough supplies so they have one less thing to worry about. Every dollar, every bag of food — everything makes a big difference,” Nawroski said.

The rescue is asking for a wide range of items, including dog and puppy food, accessories, kennels, blankets and cleaning supplies.

Donations can be dropped off at 204 Main St. in Woodlands; Brake Family Auto in Stonewall; and 230 Osborne St. and 753 Sterling Lyon Parkway in Winnipeg. Items will be collected until Dec. 20. Monetary donations are also accepted via e-transfer to snawroski@yahoo.com.
