Congrats to Teulon’s graduating class!

Date:

The 2024 graduating class of Teulon Collegiate Institute marked a milestone in their lives last week in an unforgettable celebration of their achievements.

On Friday, June 21, family and friends gathered to celebrate the success of the 27 high school graduates, who are about to embark on the next stage of their journey.

A rousing rendition of Pomp and Circumstance welcomed the procession of graduating students. The crowd rose for O Canada, and then principal Kristin Smith shared greetings on behalf of the administration.

“Today is a day of celebration, reflection and anticipation. We are here to honour the hard work, dedication and achievements of our graduating students. Your presence here today highlights the importance of this event and adds a special touch to the occasion,” Smith said.

“To the parents, guardians and families of our graduates, we thank you for your unwavering support, encouragement and sacrifices. Your love and guidance have been instrumental in helping our students reach this pivotal moment. We share in your pride and joy as we celebrate their accomplishments.”

She also shared appreciation for teachers and staff members for their commitment to education excellence and dedication to the students.

“You have not only imparted knowledge but also instilled values and life skills that will serve our graduates well in their future endeavours,” Smith said.

“To the friends and community members, your support and involvement have enriched our school environment and contributed to the success of our students. We are grateful for the positive impact you have had on their educational journey.”

At the same time, Smith acknowledged the presence of dignitaries for being part of the occasion, which serves as a celebration for the entire community that has nurtured and supported the students over the years.

“As we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2024, let us also look forward with optimism and excitement. Our graduates are about to embark on new adventures, pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions to the world,” she said.

“Your support and encouragement will continue to be essential as they navigate the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”

Vice-principal Chelsea Meier served as master of ceremonies for the afternoon event, announcing the honour roll and scholarship recipients, while also introducing the students who took the stage to receive their diploma.

In a celebration of sports achievements, Rod Ledochowski announced that the Varsity badminton team earned the title of the 2023-24 Team of the Year.

Then Alan Campbell, Interlake School Division board chair, presented the General Proficiency Award to Annika Kowalchuk. Annika has been an active volunteer, and she also left her mark at Teulon Collegiate Institute as a member of the leadership team and social justice club.

Next, assistant superintendent Tyler Moran presented the Governor General’s Award to Mary Tinker, who graduated with an impressive 94.23 grade point average.

Valedictorians Kelvyn Knor and Ben Taylor addressed the crowd and offered thanks to parents, as well as staff members of both Teulon Elementary and Teulon Collegiate.

“Our school years were truly filled with a variety of experiences that contributed to building wonderful memories. The majority of our class has been together since kindergarten. We have seen each other five days a week for 10 months out of the year. After today, we may never be all together again for another 10, 20 years. It definitely will be strange for the first while,” Kelvyn said to his longtime classmates.

“Tomorrow we are beginning the next step in our life journey. Many are preparing to move away for university or college and other will find work. Thankfully, today’s technology provides opportunities to stay connected with each other.”

Ben recalled some of his favourite memories over the years, including building snow forts during recess at Teulon Elementary — and not even caring about the cold. Other memorable moments occurred at band concerts, drama productions, Terry Fox runs, skating, curling and much more.

“The pandemic definitely was a challenging time but we survived,” Kelvyn added. “Our class is made up of strong-minded people whose determination will make us successful people that will stand out in society. We are compassionate, kind-hearted, caring individuals who have the potential to change the world one day.”

As they prepare for the next stage in their adventures, Ben took a moment to acknowledge everyone who helped the graduates reach this pivotal accomplishment.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our teachers, mentors and loved ones who have guided us, inspired us and supported us every step along the way. Without this love and support, we may not be the charming young adults we are today. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” he said.

“Fellow graduates, congratulations on this momentous achievement. Kelvyn and I are proud to be part of this class and wish each and every one of you happiness, prosperity and good health.”

Before the crowd dispersed for photos, dinner and safe grad, Smith offered a few parting words to the Class of 2024.

“Today is not just an end but also a beginning. As you step out into the world, you carry with you the knowledge, skills and values that you have acquired during your time here. I encourage you to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead with the same determination and resilience that have brought you to this point,” she said.

“Remember that success is not just measured by the goals you achieve but by the character you display and the positive impact you have on others. Continue to be curious, compassionate and courageous. Seek out new experiences, learn from them and always strive to make a difference in the world around you.”

On behalf of the entire school community, Smith extended heartfelt congratulations to each and every graduate.

“We are incredibly proud of your achievements and excited to see the incredible paths you will forge in the future,” she said.

“Go forth with confidence and purpose. The world is waiting for you, and I have no doubt that you will make it a better place. Congratulations, Class of 2024! You have made us all very proud.”
