Construction underway for new SAMS garage and office

Date:

It’s gearing up to be a great start to 2026 for Stonewall and Area Mobility Services.

A new SAMS garage and office is being built beside the town’s water treatment plant, thanks to a combination of provincial and municipal funding. Construction is expected to be complete by early spring.

“SAMS received a Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF) grant, which supported both the development of the new facility and the addition of electric and hybrid vehicles to the fleet,” said the SAMS coordinator.

“The facility was needed to support the growth and modernization of SAMS services. As part of the RTSF grant, SAMS is adding electric and hybrid buses, which require additional space and specialized infrastructure. The new location provides the room needed to store, maintain and operate both existing and new vehicles.”

The new garage will include EV charging stations and infrastructure designed to support electric and hybrid vehicles.

“These features will allow SAMS to operate a more environmentally sustainable fleet while also benefiting the broader community,” she said. “EV chargers have already been installed in the surrounding areas.”

Once the new facility is operational, SAMS will operate solely from the new garage.

“We currently are using space at the Rosewood Lodge location but that space is owned by the IERHA and is only available on a temporary basis,” she said.

SAMS provides essential transportation services in the community, helping residents access medical appointments, employment and other essential services.

“The organization supports mobility, independence and inclusion for those who rely on its services,” she said.

“This project represents a significant investment in the future of SAMS. With expanded space, municipal and government support, and the ability to operate electric and hybrid vehicles, SAMS will be well positioned to meet the community’s transportation needs for years to come.”
