Interlake Players to present horror-comedy musical

Date:

Mark your calendar for a contemporary cult-classic musical performance set to take the stage later this month.

On Sept. 25, 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., the Interlake Players will present three shows of the horror-comedy musical called The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals. All three shows will take place at Selkirk United Church, located at 202 McLean Ave.

“It’s a profanity-laced zombie horror comedy. A meteor strikes the theatre in the town of Hatchetfield. Paul, a very average guy with a strong dislike for musicals, believes the town has become infected by an alien contagion causing people to sing and dance through life as though they are in a musical,” said Mitch Obach, who founded the musical theatre company with Kendra Obach and Lindsey Weber in 2016.

“Along with his crush, the crabby barista Emma, and Paul’s quirky coworkers, they try and stop the infestation before everyone is singing and dancing.”

The music and vocals are all live, complete with a three-piece band. The show will also be licensed with a cash bar.

Originally produced by Starkid Productions, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals was written by Nick and Matt Lang, with music and lyrics by Jeff Blim.

“The audience can look forward to a lot of laughs, some great singing and complex choreography — some blood and guts, too, and lots of profanity but in an enjoyable and humorous way,” Obach said.

“The show is geared towards an adult audience, has fun music and is an homage to old campy horror films of the past. Personally, I find the show hilarious and I believe audiences will too. Nothing is as much fun for us as making folks laugh. With nine actors, this is the largest production the Interlake Players have done yet.”

Since 2016, the Interlake Players have put on four different productions in various Interlake communities including Selkirk, Gimli, Stonewall, Ashern and Teulon.

“We donate our profits to local arts groups,” Obach said. “This will be our fifth unique show and we have greatly mixed up the styles along the way.”

Tickets are available through the website https://interlake-players.yapsody.com/ where attendees can also see a map to select their seats. The cost is $20 per ticket, and the proceeds will support local non-profit organizations.
