Local author celebrates the bond between children and pets in new book

Date:

A Manitoba author has transformed the love between her daughter and two rescue dogs into a children’s story that’s already resonating with families.

Lisa Tataryn recently released My Best Friends Have Paws, a picture book inspired by her daughter’s relationship with their dogs, Axel and Rowan.

“The inspiration came directly from my daughter and our two dogs,” Tataryn said. “Watching the special bond they share — the love, loyalty and everyday adventures — made me want to capture those moments in a way that other families could connect with.”

Though Tataryn has always been creative, writing a children’s book was a new adventure. What began as a personal project to preserve family memories soon grew into something much larger.

“Once I saw how meaningful the story could be for other children and parents, I knew I had to share it,” she said.

The book is rooted in real experiences with Axel and Rowan, two rescue pups who have become constant companions for Tataryn’s daughter.

“From playing together to simply being there for her, their bond is very real — and I think that authenticity comes through in the book,” Tataryn said.

While the writing came naturally, Tataryn admits the publishing process was a steep learning curve. She navigated editing, illustration, formatting and distribution on her own.

“It was both exciting and challenging,” she said. “Each step taught me something new and made the final product even more rewarding.”

Holding the finished book for the first time was an emotional milestone.

“It was surreal,” she said. “To go from an idea in my head to holding a finished book in my hands was a dream come true, and even more special knowing it was something inspired by my own family.”

Tataryn hopes children and parents take away a sense of warmth from the story.

“Pets are often our first best friends, and they teach us so much about kindness, loyalty and unconditional love,” she said. “I want families to feel reminded of how special those bonds are.”

Her family has been her biggest cheerleaders throughout the journey, while the local community has offered encouragement and support.

“Whether it’s people buying the book, sharing it with friends or simply cheering me on, that kind of support makes the journey so much more meaningful,” she said.

And this is just the beginning.

“Yes, this book is just the beginning,” Tataryn said. “I’ve discovered a real passion for creating stories for children, and I already have more projects in the works.”

My Best Friends Have Paws is now available for families who want to celebrate the joy and lessons pets bring to children’s lives.
