Quarry expansion consultation meeting set for March 11

Date:

All are invited to learn more about a proposed extension to an existing limestone quarry at an upcoming community consultation meeting.

Lilyfield Quarry is looking to expand its operations to allow extraction on a section adjacent to the existing quarry. The proposed extension would need to follow the same operational standards as the existing quarry operations.

Located in the RM of Rosser, Lilyfield Quarry is 1.6 kilometres north of the Perimeter Highway off Highway 236. Since it’s in an agricultural zone, conditional use is required for quarry operation.

The quarry began operation in 2020 after receiving all the required government approvals. It needs to adhere to requirements related to blasting time, noise, visual conditions and protection of water and natural resources.

In addition, the quarry operation needs to rehabilitate any impacted quarry areas to meet provincial standards. The provincial and municipal governments monitor the operation to ensure compliance.

Extracted aggregate is used in infrastructure, construction and transportation improvement projects. By sourcing the aggregate close to home, the projects can be more affordable and the carbon footprint for transportation can be minimized.

At an open house event in October, community members shared feedback about noise, transparency, accountability, environmental issues, future land use and more. The company responded to these concerns and is offering another opportunity for community engagement.

On Tuesday, March 11 at 6 p.m., residents and business owners are invited to attend a Zoom meeting to hear a presentation about the proposed quarry extension and a recap of the community consultation process so far. Afterwards, there will be a question and answer period. Attendees will have the chance to share comments, concerns and suggestions.

More information is available at https://www.mrichardassociates.ca/lilyfieldquarry, along with the link to the Zoom meeting.
