Read Around the World with Stonewall library

Date:

Wherever you plan to spend your summer holidays, you’ll have the chance to embark on worldwide adventures simply by opening a book.

Starting July 1, the Stonewall library is launching its summer reading program with the theme of “Read Around the World.”

“It is an adventure you will not want to miss,” said Stonewall branch librarian Joan Ransom.

“Step into the library and marvel at our whimsical trip around the world — you will be globe-trotting in no time.”

Parents and guardians should register their young travellers for the program as soon as possible since anyone who registers before July 1 will automatically be entered to win a Kinsmen Lake beach pass.

“Over the summer, you will earn $10 library dollars for every hour you read or are read to — every minute counts on this epic expedition. One log sheet is five hours, which equals $50 that you can spend in our store,” Ransom explained.

“For every log sheet you turn in, you will receive one grand prize ballot — so the more you read, the closer you travel towards winning one of our five grand prizes, which are world class. Readers can also earn extra ballots by completing activities in their summer reading booklet in the registration package.”

Throughout the summer, staff will keep track of all the reading hours. Last year, registrants read 5,535 hours, and the library team hopes that number will soar in 2025.

Adding to the excitement, two contests will run through out the summer. For the first contest, readers can try to guess the number of “worlds” — or gumballs — in a container to win the gum as well as a book prize. For the second contest, adult readers can also enter to win a book prize package.

Ransom shared gratitude to the community partners and program sponsors who are helping to make this adventure initiative take off.

“Special shout outs to the SIRL Friends of the Library, Jim and Hazel Ridley, Tracey Malone from Inview Insurance and Ryan Madla from the Coop Food Store for their financial contributions and to The Kiln for their generous donation of treat coupons,” she said.

“Together, we are helping kids reach new worlds — because this summer, every minute read is a boarding pass to a reading journey that will take them places.”
