Rocklands threshing day revives Manitoba farm traditions

Date:

A glimpse into Manitoba’s agricultural past came to life on Sept. 27 as the Rocklands Antique Club hosted a threshing demonstration at the South Interlake Ag Grounds.

The hands-on event drew spectators eager to see how grain was harvested in the early days before modern machinery transformed farming. Volunteers had cut the crop two weeks earlier, binding it into sheaves and stacking them into stooks — just as prairie farmers would have done generations ago.

On demonstration day, two bale wagons of grain were threshed using vintage equipment. One load was powered by Roy Campbell’s classic Rumley tractor, while the second was driven by Wally Ewonchuk’s 1945 John Deere AR.

The event was both an educational showcase and a celebration of rural heritage, highlighting the hard work, ingenuity and community spirit that defined harvest time on the Prairies.
