Nearly 300 players packed the Stonewall Curling Rink from Sept. 5 to 7 for the South Interlake 55 Plus fourth annual pickleball tournament, a three-day competition that drew participants from across Manitoba and beyond. The event featured 147 doubles teams in 567 games, including 479 round-robin matches and 88 playoff contests.
Divisions were spread across the weekend, with women’s play Friday, mixed on Saturday and men’s on Sunday. The age of players ranged from 25 to 82, with teams travelling from as far as Kenora and one participant flying in from Denver, Colo.
“It was incredible to see such a wide age range on the courts — everyone playing side by side and having fun,” said organizer Emma Forbes. “That’s one of the things that makes pickleball so special — it really is a sport for all ages.”
About 50 volunteers contributed more than 700 hours to help run the event. Local businesses also saw a boost as visiting players and spectators dined and shopped in the community.
“This tournament isn’t just about the games, it’s about building community,” Forbes said. “The support from volunteers, spectators and local businesses is what makes it all possible.”
A total of 68 medal certificates were awarded, many to local teams. All proceeds from the event will support South Interlake 55 Plus senior programs.
