Stonewall Heritage Committee seeks objects for pop-up exhibit

Date:

Do you have an object or artifact that provides a glimpse into Stonewall’s history?

The Stonewall Heritage Committee is hoping to borrow objects from residents for a one-day pop-up exhibit on Sunday, Sept. 21 called Stories of Our Past.

Catherine Precourt, a member of the heritage committee, explained that the free exhibit will showcase local photos and artifacts that highlight Stonewall’s rich history.

“Over the years, the committee has had the opportunity to collect a few interesting things. We don’t have a dedicated museum space in Stonewall where you can go and check out the latest exhibit, so we’re doing a one-day pop up. We’re pulling some of these interesting items together and using them to tell a few stories from the past,” she said.

“We were thinking that if we’ve collected all these wonderful things, members of the public probably have some wonderful things with unique Stonewall stories attached to them. If you have something that might help tell Stonewall’s story of the past, we’re inviting the public to loan it to us for the day.”

The pop-up exhibit will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Heritage Arts Centre. The heritage committee chose the date to coincide with Culture Days Manitoba, which runs from Sept. 19 to Oct. 12.

General themes for the pop-up event include school days, war and remembrance, around the house, in the shop, entertainment and recreation, service clubs and fraternal organizations, local merchants and in the news. Attendees will also have the chance to try to identify objects displayed on a mystery table.

“If we get a good response, we want to look at doing other exhibits. You might find us popping up at other venues around Stonewall in the future for mini exhibits,” Precourt said.

“We’ll be asking the public for suggestions about what they would like to see an exhibit about and what stories of Stonewall would they would like to learn more about.”

Anyone interested in loaning an object to display at the one-day Stories of Our Past pop-up event can email Catherine Precourt at precourt283@gmail.com before Sept. 18.
