Stonewall winner earns country music award

Date:

Congratulations are in order for a local musician who nabbed a Manitoba Country Music Association award.

Derek Peters of Stonewall earned the award in the category of Country Music Video of the Year for his song “What’s Left of the Night,” which he wrote along with Dave Wasyliw, Evan Taplin and Murray Pulver.

Peters said he feels super grateful to be named the winner.

“We had too much fun making this video, and I’m just so honoured to be recognized for it,” he said.

“The video is actually quite clever. My video director Landon Lake is really creative. He’s amazing.”

The setting will be familiar to many people since the video was shot at Birds Hill on a hot summer day.

“It was 35 degrees that day, so I literally had to wipe sweat off between every take,” Peters said. “We were so fortunate to have an amazing sunset during the shots of me playing my acoustic.”

For Peters, he has some idea of what aspects of the video likely captured the judges’ attention.

“It’s not every day you see a grown man playing with dolls,” he said with a laugh.

Peters was also nominated in the categories of Single of the Year for “What’s Left of the Night” and the Fay Walker Song of the Year for “What’s Left of the Night.”

Award winners were announced on Nov. 10 at Club Regent Casino and Event Centre in Winnipeg.

Looking ahead, Peters will perform with Lachlan McLean and Emma Peterson for Christmas shows in Neepawa and Dauphin on Dec. 14 and 15. He’ll also be playing at the Burton Cummings Theatre for Glove Box Gold’s Tom Petty tribute show.
