Stony Mountain students shared their creative flair in a design project that also imparted an important message.
Grade 5 and 6 students worked together to create a colourful Canadian-themed jacket for Laine Wilson to wear on an upcoming trip to Ottawa. Wilson, community relations director for the RM of Rockwood, will be on Parliament Hill this fall through her role with the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association.
The eye-catching apparel focuses on a patriotic theme: “What makes Canada strong?”
Guided by their teachers Chelsea Dutkiewich and Jodie Stewart, the students embraced roles as researchers, designers and painters — resulting in an impressive piece of wearable art.
As for Wilson, she is looking forward to donning the unique jacket on her journey to the nation’s capital.
“I am insanely impressed by the talented students who designed and completed a one-of-a-kind jacket for me to wear on my upcoming trip to Parliament Hill this fall and the work their teachers did to facilitate this project,” she said.
“Their work captures the spirit, diversity and pride of what it means to be Canadian and what makes us strong. I am incredibly proud to wear this unique piece of art — hand-drawn and colourfully brought to life by young creatives in our community.”
At the same time, the vibrant coat embodies the spirit of collaborative effort.
“This project is a beautiful example of what happens when schools and communities come together in partnership,” Wilson said.
“It’s more than just a jacket — it’s a powerful symbol of collaboration, creativity and representation. I am grateful to them for helping me carry our shared story with pride.”
