Stony Mountain volunteer recognized for 20 years of service

Community spirit thrives in Stony Mountain, and at the heart of it is Marcia Desmedt. She was recently honoured during the final community concert of the season at Bison Stage on Sept. 14 for more than two decades of service with the Stony Mountain Community Association (SMCA).

Dave Van Heyst, a longtime SMCA member, introduced Desmedt with warmth, describing her as a familiar face whose commitment to the community is unmatched.

“Marcia has led with vision, compassion and an unwavering commitment to Stony Mountain,” he said. “She has poured her heart into every initiative and project that strengthens the community. Her leadership shines through in countless ways, from organizing events to supporting local causes.”

Desmedt’s journey with the SMCA began 20 years ago as part of a grassroots street party initiative led by Greg Popoff to bring neighbours together. That gathering later evolved into the SMCA in 2007, with Desmedt playing a crucial role in its growth.

Over the years, she has inspired others to contribute, and her influence can be found in events and initiatives that have enriched lives across Stony Mountain.

Eight years ago, she stepped into the role of SMCA president, bringing fresh energy and vision. She has helped organize family festivals, Canada Day celebrations and Stony Mountain’s Remembrance Day service. She has also championed youth sports and adult recreation programs, while her insight and hard work have contributed to improvements in community infrastructure.

Van Heyst said each initiative under Desmedt’s leadership has helped strengthen the community fabric.

“Marcia, your work has touched every corner of this community — from the bandstand, parks and trails we enjoy, to the sense of connection we feel,” he said. “You’ve helped build not just programs and events but a true sense of belonging.”

Desmedt said she was touched and surprised by the recognition.

“I appreciate this so, so much,” she said. “This is an incredible team to work with. Being on this committee is being part of an incredible group of people that all take turns running and organizing things — and you learn and you grow. To me this is the best part of living in Stony Mountain, being part of this group and providing for you. When you attend and participate in events like this, it means the world to us.”

The inscription on her award reads: “In recognition of your outstanding contributions to our community and the SMCA. Your tireless efforts and volunteering over the last 20+ years have created a positive impact in Stony Mountain. Thank you for your dedication.”
