U13 Maroons off to golden start in AA Softball

Date:

After only two practices so far this season, the U13 Interlake Maroons are already winning gold medals.

Last weekend the club played in the 2024 AA Showcase at Buhler Park as the top AA softball teams in the province kicked off their seasons.

The Maroons won five of six games on the weekend including the gold medal game against the Westman Fury by a score of 11-9.

“The girls were beyond excited to win,” said Maroons coach Jeffery Spruyt. “I think they even surprised themselves a little bit. Lots of these girls didn’t even know each other when the team was made. They come from six different communities and between them attend seven different schools. They have bonded well and have proved their commitment to each other as teammates.”

On route to the gold medal the Maroons played four round robin games going 3-1 throughout.

Their record qualified them for the semi-finals where they defeated the Westman Heat in a 7-6 nailbiter to advance to the gold medal game.

“Once we had a game or two under our belts, we were able to really start figuring out plays, calls and the girls played smart,” said Spruyt. “Strong hitting and strong field plays really helped these girls get to the end. Winning really showed the determination and drive these girls all have,” said Spruyt. “It was a proud moment to see our team and the Interlake represented so well.”

Now with the tournament over the Maroons can get settled into their regular season.

Two weeks ago, they opened the season with a 24-7 win over the Southwest Strikers but haven’t played a regular season game since.

They will take the field next on July 10 for a pair of games in Steinbach in regular season action.
