Unique harvest helps to support nourishing communities

Date:

The Rick Rutherford Farms hosted their 3rd annual Harvest on the Crescent at Rick Rutherford’s home on Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg.

Rutherford grows a small plot of grain on the crescent every spring and then harvests it in the fall. Friends and colleagues were invited to a cocktail reception to celebrate the harvest on Sept. 14 at Rutherford’s home.

People donated by either sponsoring or purchasing tickets. There was a live auction as well with 100 per cent of the proceeds being donated to Harvest Manitoba.

To date Rutherford Farms has donated $98,000 to Harvest Manitoba.

Harvest Manitoba CEO Vince Barlette thanked Rutherford for the incredible gift.

“Your generous donation will ensure struggling families, seniors and adults throughout the province have access to healthy and nutritious food. Your support means everything to us as we continue to serve a record number of hungry Manitobans,” said Barlette.

Harvest on the Crescent seeks to bring education and a first-hand experience with agriculture to people of all ages in the City of Winnipeg. Harvest is an initiative started by Rick Rutherford and his agri-friends. Located at 703 Wellington Crescent, this historic property is well-positioned to engage hundreds a of people in agriculture each summer.

This summer, a plot of oats and barley were seeded on the front lawn of 703 Wellington Crescent. A storyboard was erected to highlight the initiative, modern agriculture and the role of technology.

The season culminates with this celebration reception all in support of Harvest Manitoba.
