Summer is here and community members are enjoying fun in the sun — including along Rockwood’s trail system.
Work began in the fall to convert a retired railbed line into a five-kilometre multi-use pathway running from the southeast tip of Rockwood all the way north to Komarno, including stretches that run through Stonewall and Teulon.
Coun. Curtis McClintock said that council is continuing to work on the trail system.
“This spring, the paved trail saw a couple meaningful additions,” he said. “Waring Landscape Supply installed four beautiful rock granite benches in marked locations from Summit Road to Winfield.”
In addition, the municipality’s parks team is planting 1,010 trees in various spots along the trail.
“Tree planting has begun, thanks to Kito and his team. The species were selected based on a number of factors — longevity, esthetics, fruit-bearing,” McClintock said.
“The species are a blend of aspens, hackberries, apples, elms, lindens, spruce, ash and poplar. These trees were provided to the municipality at no cost, thanks the 2 Billion Tree program through the Province of Manitoba.”
The provincial government signed an agreement with Natural Resources Canada on the 2 Billion Trees program, which allows cost-sharing with the federal government for increased tree planting in Manitoba. This initiative and funding is in place until 2031. The long-term goal is to plant up to one million additional trees annually for the life of the program.
These trees will be enjoyed by visitors to the local trail, which continues to be well-used.
“It provides our residents in the surrounding area with an accessible, safe and active transportation opportunity,” McClintock said.
“This trail offers enhanced accessibility and safety, making outdoor activities more inclusive and reducing the risk of injuries. Typically, trails are low-maintenance, weather-resistant and environmentally friendly, providing a durable and attractive surface that supports various recreational activities. Additionally, we hope this trail promotes community connectivity.”
He also extended gratitude for the grants that have helped make this project possible.
“We were fortunate to have received significant granting money to complete the project and to continue additional benefits into the future,” he said.
“We appreciate the patience of the community through the construction phases.”
Joie Van Dongen from Age Friendly Stonewall/Rockwood is impressed with the Rockwood Rail Trail — and she encourages everyone to check it out.
“It is well marked on Summit Road with a parking area. The comfortable benches are conveniently placed for walking and resting,” she said.
“The addition of trees will keep it sheltered and there is room on the side for cross-country skiing. Age Friendly encourages all ages to try out the trail on bike, mobility equipment or for a pleasant hike.”
