Morden FD releases anniversary coin

Date:

A student’s high school project is helping Morden Fire and Rescue mark a milestone.

Brayden Baumgart, who is a Gr. 11 student at Morden Collegiate, needed to design a logo for his marketing class, and he initially couldn’t settle on an idea for his project.

His father Jon happens to be a captain with Morden Fire and Rescue, so he suggested doing something around the department’s 120th anniversary.

“I looked through a bunch of different logo ideas … and my dad gave me some thoughts on colours and fonts, so I put it all together,” the younger Baumgart shared. “I was looking at past logos for other fire departments, and I just kind of combined these different elements.”

The front features the 120th anniversary patch while the back showcases a rendition of the department’s first fire truck alongside the new tower ladder truck that is arriving sometime this year.

“We wanted to celebrate the anniversary somehow, just at least acknowledge it in some way,” said Chief Andy Thiessen.

He was pleased when Baumgart ran with the idea, and Thiessen saw the potential for them to make good use of the logo.

“He ran with it and provided us with a logo that we’ve incorporated now onto our trucks,” Thiessen “We also got some new shirts for the members this year with that logo on it as well.

“We designed a challenge coin with that logo in mind as well,” the chief said, adding they also plan to prepare some paraphernalia incorporating the logo for when they host an open house in September.

“It’s worked out really well for us,” said Thiessen. “I just think it’s kind of cool an idea like this could come up … and I think for Brayden to design a logo that we could really make use of is pretty cool.”

“I had never thought it would be used like this,” said Baumgart. “To actually be used for their 120th anniversary, it’s kind of surprising. I’m really happy with it.

The coins are available for $20 each plus $5 for shipping. They can also be picked up at the fire hall.

All proceeds from the sales will go towards supporting the Morden Firefighters Association’s initiatives.
