Donation to Legion supporting accessibility improvements

Date:

A family with a long history of connection to the Morden Legion have done their part to help with an ongoing project at the branch.

Members of the family of Ed and Ruth Maddock recently presented a $515 donation to the Legion in support of the renovation of its bathrooms.

“Our bathrooms currently are not accessible, and given our patrons … we want to have accessibility as a big part of our building, so we’ve installed new handicapped accessible doors, and the next project is really focusing on our bathrooms, which we understand is going to be a large project,” said Jason Evert, president of the Morden Legion Branch 11.

Sherry Woods, the Maddocks’ daughter, made the presentation on behalf of her family and her sister-in-law’s family.

“They spent so much time here. Growing up, my dad was padre here for so many years. My mom and dad spent a lot of time here. They were always involved,” said Woods. “I can still see her here in her Legion uniform. They were always here.

“We just felt it was important, and they are doing so many renovations, so we thought this was a good time to make a donation,” she added, citing the importance of the Legion to the community, as it connects a lot of people.

“And it’s nice to see a Legion that can still function, and it’s still able to do it because a lot of them can’t because they don’t have the funding … it’s nice that they can still do it here.”

Evert said all donations large and small are appreciated, and he suggested a donation like this perhaps might spur others to support the project as well.

“This donation is really going to go a long ways towards helping with it, and we will have a lot of things coming up this year with a lot of fundraising and applying for grants so we can do our best towards working on that project as quickly as we can,” he noted.

“Any donation helps, every little bit, and this one especially is kind of special coming from the Maddock family for Ed, who served us as the padre. Ed and his wife were patrons who came here and spent so much of their lives here, so we are really happy to have been able to kind of link these two aspects.”
