Athletics battle through tight games at JV provincials

Date:

The Arborg Athletics were in the thick of several tight games while competing at the Provincial A/AA JV Boys Basketball Championship hosted by Carman Collegiate from March 12–14.

Arborg opened the tournament against the Frontier Raiders in the quarterfinals on March 12. The Raiders pulled away for a 52–43 win, sending the Athletics to the consolation bracket.

The Athletics responded the next day with one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Arborg edged the St.-Joachim Braves 48–46 in the consolation semifinal, earning a shot at the consolation title.

Arborg then faced the Rosenort Redhawks in the consolation final on March 14, where another close contest unfolded. Rosenort narrowly claimed the game 57–55, with the Athletics finishing just short in the final moments.

Several Arborg players earned recognition for their performances throughout the provincial championship. Locklin Pearce was named Arborg’s player of the game in their opening matchup against Frontier, while Mason Bardarson earned the honour in the Athletics’ win over St. Joachim. Tatum O’Neill was recognized as Arborg’s player of the game in the consolation final against Rosenort.

Frontier went on to win the provincial title later Saturday, defeating the Warren Wildcats 71–68 in the championship game.

Eight teams from across Manitoba competed in the three-day Provincial A/AA JV Boys Basketball Championship, including Carman, Warren, Souris, Frontier, Rosenort, Arborg, St. Joachim and Immanuel Christian, with all games played at Carman Collegiate.
