Fisher Branch Collegiate student earns bronze in pentathlon

Date:

A student at Fisher Branch Collegiate stepped up to the sports podium to receive a well-earned medal in pentathlon at the high school provincial competition last week.

Patrick Yuzwa, who’s in Grade 11, competed long jump, high jump, shot put and the 100- and 800-metre races.

Patrick’s mom, Tannis, said he’s a “very compassionate kid” that loves to encourage others to strive and succeed.

“He trained starting in spring and he was passionate about all the events,” said Tannis. “He really encouraged his friends and the younger grades about how rewarding physical exercise is.”

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association’s track and field provincial championships are hosted by the University of Manitoba where both urban and rural student athletes compete and earn medals.

Fisher Branch Collegiate’s teacher and athletic director Nathan Lee said 12 students from grades 10 to 12 competed at provincials, and that Patrick worked hard to achieve his personal athletic goals.

“Patrick is a dedicated student athlete. It is nice to see all his hard work pay off with a podium finish,” said Lee. “Last year, at the JV level he finished 7th. His goal this year was to have a better finish and he accomplished that.”

Students in the middle years grades at Fisher Branch Collegiate also competed at provincials, said Lee, and they had a Grade 7 student earn a silver medal.
