Fisher Branch to host CFRY Radio Amateur Talent Night Feb. 21

Date:

Get ready to see the best of the best perform at Fisher Branch’s CFRY Radio Amateur Talent Night on Feb. 21.

From 7 to 10 p.m. at the Fisher Branch Community Centre, 25 acts will take the stage as they compete for the title of CFRY Radio Amateur Talent Night champion.

The evening will serve as a fundraiser for the Fisher Branch Recreation Centre, with proceeds supporting ceiling renovations and upgrades to the change-room showers.

Rec Centre president Danya Ferris said the event will offer entertainment for people of all ages.

“We want to try and bring our community together and have an evening of fellowship,” she said. “We know Fisher Branch has a lot of talent to be shown.”

Fisher Branch has hosted talent nights in the past, the last held before the COVID-19 pandemic. CFRY talent nights, meanwhile, have taken place in rural Manitoba communities since the 1970s to showcase performers while fundraising for local projects.

Those in attendance can expect an evening of entertainment and food featuring performers from Fisher Branch and surrounding communities.

Ferris said the 25 registered acts will be judged by community members experienced in the performance styles presented. The top three performers will receive cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300, and CFRY will present a plaque for “Most Promising Talent.”

Audience members are welcome and encouraged to attend. For a $5 admission fee, guests can experience the evening firsthand.

Those unable to attend in person can tune in to CFRY 920 AM to listen to the performances.

Listeners will be able to call in to pledge toward their favourite performer. A number will be shared prior to the talent night. Pledge payments can be made by bringing cash or cheque to Access Credit Union or by e-transfer to fbreccenter@outlook.com.

“This event is important to Fisher Branch because it brings the community together, showcases talent of all ages and raises money for the rec centre,” Ferris added. “Without the community, these events cannot be successful. It highlights the talent we have and gives us a chance to come together for a night of fun.”

To Ferris, a successful talent night means contestants and audience members having fun and wanting to return. She said she is excited to see the community come alive in support of the Fisher Branch Rec Centre.

“It takes a community to keep these buildings running and functional,” she added.
